Photo by JMFirst time I went to the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, I wore slippers. It was rather spontaneous. I remember it because a year ago we lost a loved one. Even though time passed and we were in a safer space, it was cold. Our hearts were vulnerable and still bleeding inside.

The tranquil scenery of the Pretoria National Botanical Garden was healing. Our family picnic was special. There was a sense of letting go and belonging. As we walked past the waterfall, climbed up the walking trails and helped each other get over obsticles; I felt the gentle breeze penetrate my lungs and reassure me that I was indeed loved. I was alive. It could not end this way.

I think we all walked away from there feeling stronger. Even in the cold of winter, we made rooms for laughter and ice-cream. We had each other and the love we knew was not lost. It is.
