Located close to Amadwala Lodge, is the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, West of Johannesburg. Right in that garden, lies Eagle's Fare Restaurant and Wedding Venue. You get front-row seats to nature, chirping birds and lush green lawns as you dine. It is downright beautiful.

The sweeter things of life

We ordered the cheesecake and apple crumble with ice-cream, as well as drinks. The preparation time of the two dishes was very long. Several waiters randomly told us that they were aware that the food was taking rather long, but that they would follow-up.

Thankfully we were neither in a hurry nor hungry. Otherwise, I would be reluctant to go back to this establishment for this particular reason, especially considering that it was not full.

When the desserts eventually arrived, they were generous. I did not enjoy the cheesecake as it had a somewhat unique cheesecake taste. I was hoping for the classic cheesecake. Even though I did not like it, I commend their slight spin to the taste. I guess it was a risk that they took to try and add a personal touch to the recipe.

The apple crumble on the other hand was something to rave about. Yummy! Tasty! Delicious! One waiter had said that it was the reason that the order took so long to come out; and upon tasting it, all was in order. The presentation of both dishes was gorgeous. You could see that a lot of effort went into each plate. Again, I commend the establishment.

Saved by nature

The establishment itself, particularly the outside seating area, was rather bland. There was nothing out of the ordinary about it. It was a little cramped up and not what I expected for a restaurant in such a unique and impressive setting. There were a lot of umbrellas and crammed up tables and chairs. The seat cushions were very old and flaky. The outside decor was pretty much non-existent or very low key.

The staff, customer service, generous servings and taste of the food was excellent. I don't know when last I went to a restaurant and had so many servers and managers come round to ask if everything was in order. It gets a bit overwhelming, but I guess their heart is at the right place, so all is in order. Our young server was fantastic and kind.

All in all, this dining experience enhanced our visit to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. Remember to apply sunscreen (available from Amazon) and to drink enough water, particularly when hiking up the mountain, near the grandeur waterfall. Armed with good company - or even just yourself - this place is worth visiting when you are in the area.
