I have not blogged in about two months. I wanted to, but the words in my heart refused to come out. They were there, but something inside me knew that there is also a time to be still. A time to inhale. Such was the time, but as promised, joy came in the morning. This blog was written in the morning (not in the literal sense).

While driving around Pretoria on Monday, 30 April 2018; we eventually ended up at Sun International's Time Square in Menlyn, Pretoria. There were many awesome nearby options like Something's Cooking by J'Something, but we agreed that the place to go to was Guy Fieri's kitchen & bar. I wanted to see "the [cowboy] bull" I had read about in the newspaper when they announced the launch of the establishment some time back.

I can't begin to describe the excitement I had about my surprise visit to the South African branch of an establishment by the internationally acclaimed Guy Fieri; especially since I grew up watching "Guy's Big Bite" show on the Food Network channel. It is also worth mentioning that Guy is the winner of the second season of The Next Food Network Star.

Biker place with a twist

The atmosphere of the place was exciting. It was so much better than I imagined and had an international vibe to it. Upon entering, it was clear that it attracted a certain kind of clientele. Perhaps the underlying biker feel had something to do with it - or the fact that I went on a Monday late afternoon and early evening. Whatever the case, the profile of the patrons was not very diverse.

I really loved how one gets the captivating biker elements, but it is not a dark and dingy place. The design elements are spectacular. There's even a bar area (available from Amazon) with tasteful animal prints on the bar stools (available from Amazon). I saw the "bull". No one was riding the cowboy bull (different kinds are available from Amazon) and by the time I wanted to, my tummy was rather full. It looked fun and I could imagine how it ignited the place and add to the fun element when dining with friends. The wooded menus were also worth praising.

Exceptional food presentation

The food was nothing short of a visual artwork. We could also not help looking at other wooden serving boards (available from Amazon) to see how the food was plated. It looked fantastic and you got the feeling that you were dining somewhere special. The presentation was matched with the taste. Some of the flavours were unusual to me, but were still tasty. One could see that the food is skillfully prepared. It was a pleasure to indulge in this food.

We ordered two dishes. One was a signature sandwich and the other a big bite burger. I tasted both. They were well plated and looked so yummy. The food tasted different and this was good because you could see the expertise in their products. It is not every day that you order "regular" meals and they turn out in a way that pleasantly surprises you.

Bones in my burger

I was however disappointed by chewing on a bone in my burger. It was painful, but I brushed it off as it can happen to anyone. A few minutes later, I chewed on another bone (see photo below). This time I took the bone out of my mouth and was wary of eating some more. I showed it to the waiter who said that it was "strange" for a bone to be in the burger patty.

He then took the bone to the kitchen for it to be "inspected" and returned to say they were still not too sure, but would pass on the bone to the head chef. Eventually, after the waiter consulted the head chef, I was given an apology by the waiter and offered dessert or another burger.

I opted for the cheesecake. I was later told the cheesecake was not available, but they could offer me another cake instead; some chocolate cake and they would make it big for the inconvenience. All in all, the entire place turned out to be refreshing, but the customer service could have been better. The food was delicious and showcased Guy Fieri's talents.
